Mari Garcés
Mari’s motivation for singing is rooted in a curiosity with the voice. As a child, she was fascinated by the feelings that arose when she sang. As she got older, her interests developed into her instrument’s psychosomatic duality: the voice as a muscle function, and its close connection to our emotions. This duality creates both opportunities and limitations, and will always convey human experience.
Originally from Oslo, Norway, Garcés moved to Bergen to study vocal performance at the Grieg Academy. During her master’s degree, she specialized in classical and contemporary music from the twentieth century. She has premiered a number of works by both emerging and acclaimed composers.
In search of new expressions, Mari explores acoustic classical music, electronics and free improvisation. She has performed in art galleries, bars, libraries, restaurants, opera houses, churches and concert halls. Her goal in performing music is to make the audience feel or think in ways they may have otherwise not though possible.
